Description
Description | Sq’éwlets First Nation is a growing community of over 300 members located on Harrison Bay in British Columbia’s upper Fraser Valley. The Sq’éwlets People are a tribe of the St¿:lo and are part of the larger collective of Coast Salish Nations. The community of Sq’éwlets is committed to creating a safe, healthy, and sustainable future while being stewards of the land, water, and air. Sq’éwlets has recently invested significantly in the growth of the community, including planning for future residential housing, economic development, and creating vibrant new spaces for sports and recreation. To continue this community investment, Sq’éwlets has prepared an Active Transportation Plan, which identifies the Sq’éwlets Cultural and Recreational Multi-use Trail as a priority infrastructure project. The intent of the trail is to facilitate improved access to cultural space for residents, while also providing a trail that can serve recreation, mental and physical health, and economic development needs. The development of the Sq’éwlets Cultural and Recreational Multi-use Trail was identified as a priority project and represents a key cultural and recreational active transportation opportunity. The project will be located in the northern portion of the reserve lands, also called IR #3 or Squakum Creek. This project will be the first phase of a greater comprehensive trail network in the community. This 775m segment of trail will begin on the north side of Lougheed Highway, running adjacent to the Sq’éwlets cemetery, a place of great community and cultural significance. The trail will connect to an upper viewpoint overlooking Harrison Bay. Future phases of the project will expand the trail east and south, linking with the community at Harrison Bay to create an off-street connection The trail route is currently an overgrown logging road. The desire line of the trail is passable, but not accessible, easy to navigate, or well-maintained. Beginning just north of Lougheed Highway through |
