Pedestrian and streetscape improvements along Confederate Avenue were identified as a high priority during development of the Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) plan, completed in 2007. The project would represent a continuation of pedestrian oriented infrastructure improvements previously implemented on Main Street. Confederate Avenue/State Route 61 serves as the northern gateway to the city, and the second busiest traffic corridor within the downtown area. The goal of the project is to provide operational, pedestrian, and bicycle enhancements, improved mobility for all users, and to balance transportation options. The corridor is a mixture of single family residences, institutions, and commercial businesses. The destinations located within the project limits are within a walkable distance to each other and to surrounding neighborhoods. The proposed project would support the City’s efforts to provide pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure to improve mobility.
