SSEN Transmission Modular Substation Programme

SSEN Transmission is introducing a new approach to substation delivery through standardised modular designs that allow much of the assembly, wiring and testing to be completed off site before installation and commissioning. The modular substations are designed to operate at 132 kV and 33 kV and are intended for smaller grid connection projects, including individual wind farms and other renewable generation assets. The programme is being rolled out across a large share of customer connection projects, with first energisations expected from autumn 2028. The approach reduces on-site construction time, limits the physical footprint of infrastructure works, and reduces disruption for local communities while maintaining safety, quality, and reliability standards.
