Opportunity St. Joseph’s Health Care, London is a patient care, teaching and research centre providing acute ambulatory care, rehabilitation, specialized mental health care, care of the elderly and complex continuing care. In 1997 St. Joseph’s Health Care, London and the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC)—a health care organization operating from three hospital sites— began working together to reorganize and align the delivery of acute care services in London, as prescribed by Health Services Restructuring Commission directives. Reorganizing health care services required the construction of new facilities as well as the renovation of existing space. In 2006 Milestone 2, Phase 1(M2P1) of the restructuring began at St. Joseph's using a public-private partnership. Building on the success of M2P1 a public-private partnership was used again for Milestone 2, Phase 2(M2P2) which began in 2008 and included both St. Joseph’s and LHSC. Milestone 2, Phase 3 (M2P3) is the third and final phase restructuring taking place for both organizations. Innovations While M2P3 at St. Joseph’s and LHSC were procured together from the same consortium generating operational efficiencies and economies of scale, two separate Project Agreements were signed. Results Over 87,321 square feet of existing space was renovated and a 79,813 square-foot addition was constructed allowing outpatient clinics to be consolidated. The addition and renovations allow for more natural light and include barrier-free features that make the building more accessible to people with disabilities. The project also involved the demolition of 107,618 square feet of space that was no longer met the needs of modern medicine.
