Description
Description | Opportunity Originally designed to accommodate 44,500 patient visits a year, St. Michael’s emergency department now sees more than 70,000 patient visits annually—a number that continues to grow with Toronto’s population. The hospital requires an expanded emergency room in order to continue to fulfill its mandate as a regional trauma centre. Additionally, a new patient care tower is required to be able to relocate patient beds from an 85-year-old wing. The new tower will also provide larger more modern space for programs that treat some of the most critically ill patients across Ontario including patients from the medical-surgical intensive care unit and the largest adult cystic fibrosis program in North America. Innovations St. Michael’s Partnership will finance and construct the new facility, receiving an interim completion payment and a substantial completion payment. This provides incentive to ensure the project is completed on-time. Results The new 17-storey Peter Gilgan Patient Tower at the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets has been specifically designed to care for critically ill patients including: Five new purpose-built, state-of-the-art operating rooms designed to incorporate medical imaging equipment such as MRIs, CT scanners and X-rays; Enlarged, state-of-the-art facilities such as orthopedic surgery, oncology, coronary care, respirology; and Expansion of the current emergency department. All patient rooms in the new towerare private, increasing infection control and providing more privacy leading to better health outcomes Renovation of approximately 150,000 square feet of existing space provides larger, more modern space equipped to manage the hospital’s current patient care volumes. St. Michael’s Hospital remains publicly owned and publicly controlled. Healthcare continues to be publicly funded and publicly administered. Approximately 95 per cent of the labour force for the hospital redevelopment came from the Greater Toronto Area. “This is a significant step toward renewing our hospital. The future patient care tower and renovations to the Emergency Department will provide the proper space to be both a downtown trauma centre and a local hospital for a diverse and changing inner city population. New technology and design will improve safety, patient outcomes and patient experience.” - Dr. Robert Howard, Chief Executive Officer, St. Michael’s Hospital |
