St. Petersburg MMT, formerly known as Leningrad Long Distance Telephone Exchange, was created in 1993, after the formation of the state holding company Svyazinvest. Subsequently, the company was privatized. Svyazinvest held 38% of the charter capital and 51% of the voting rights by 1998. The remaining of the shares were held by small investors and employees. Metromedia International Group acquired the company in May 1999. By 1998, the company was the largest communications company in the North-West of Russia, offering long-distance and international calls, as well as value-added services like fax, e-mail. The company's total revenues exceeded $158 million in 1996. The value of the company was estimated in US$145.4 million. in 2000 merged with Petesburg Telephone Network and became part of JSC North-West Telecom in November 2002
