Opportunity The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is a 166-bed facility providing comprehensive 24-hour health care including Emergency, Surgery, Family Medecine and Pediatrics. The Great Expansion of St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital represents the single largest investment in the award-winning hospital since it was originally built 60 years ago. New emergency, ambulatory and mental health facilities will allow the hospital to deliver high quality, timely healthcare with advanced medical equipment fitting the 21st century. Innovations EllisDon was only paid when substantial completion was achieved (November 2017). Results The project resulted in a three-storey, 104,770 square-foot addition to the north-west side of the current hospital. Highlights include: Doubling the size of the Emergency Department including 15 modern exam rooms, two trauma rooms, private triage and patient registration areas, separation of critical trauma patients from those with minor ailments and an enclosed ambulance garage separate from the public entrance; Larger state-of-the-art operating rooms including separate rooms for minor surgical procedures, expanded Post-Anesthetic Care Unit and Day Surgery Unit, large recovery bays to maximize patient privacy and comfort, and dedicated elevators linked to the Medical Device Reprocessing Department for increased safety and infection control; A new Medical Device Reprocessing Department featuring centralized traffic flow and design for containment of contaminants and restricted access and one-way workflow; and A new permanent home for mental health care at the hospital including a 15-bed acute inpatient unit and outpatient programs and services, single patient bedrooms with private bathrooms and state-of-the-art technology for patient safety and security.
