Description

Description

The ongoing civil war in Syria is leading to an increasing influx of refugees into neighboring countries. The regional project supports basic infrastructure projects in the neighboring countries of Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt. The influx is putting a strain on the already scarce resources and social infrastructure, particularly in districts close to the border in the host countries. It can be assumed that the situation will worsen in the coming months due to further influx and that the refugees will not be able to return to Syria for the time being. The aim of the FC measure is to contribute to the stabilization of neighboring countries by quickly improving basic infrastructure, giving refugees access to basic education and sustainable water and sanitation supplies, child welfare measures, basic health care and food security. These sectors are the direct responsibility of UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) and the WEP (UN World Food Program). The measures focus on areas with a high refugee presence. The target group includes both Syrian refugees in camps and municipalities as well as the local population in the host municipalities. The total cost of the regional project is estimated by UN organizations in the Regional Response Plan for 2014 at USD 4.2 billion. The submitted audit of EUR 10 million will partially finance UNICEF's further financing needs in Jordan in the education and child protection sectors in 2014, in continuation of the German contribution.
