Eleven data center campuses in the US tied to OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, and xAI are under construction with natural gas power projects that could emit more than 129 million tons of greenhouse gases annually, exceeding Morocco's entire 2024 emissions. The Stargate Project, led by OpenAI, includes three natural gas projects with a combined potential to emit over 24 million tons annually. xAI's Colossus campuses in Memphis and Southaven could each generate over 6.4 million tons of CO2 equivalents per year. Microsoft is reportedly pursuing a Chevron-backed project in West Texas with a permit for 11.5 million tons of emissions annually. These projects represent a significant entrenchment of fossil fuel power in data center energy supply, reversing grid decarbonization trends.
