State Route 1 Safety and Roadway Improvement Project

Caltrans Bay Area (District 4) is in the final stages of completing all scheduled work on State Route 1 in San Francisco between the San Francisco / San Mateo County Line and Lake Street in the Richmond District. As the final phase, crews will be repairing curb ramps and signage through December 2020 at the following four intersections: Lake Street, Crossover Drive, Martin Luther King Drive, and Crespi Drive. Some inspection and follow up work may take place in January 2021, however this will not involve any traffic impacts. Caltrans installed new traffic signal poles this past season at Lake Street, Crossover Drive, Martin Luther King Drive, and Crespi Drive. These signal lights will improve visibility and safety as they are taller, positioned more effectively, and their arm masts extend further into the sight line of drivers. Prior to this, Caltrans completed grinding, paving, and lane striping work on the northern and southern portions of State Route 1 (SR-1) between March 2020 and June 2020. The work repaired multiple potholes, cracks, and imperfections on the roadway. The southern portion, approximately one mile in length, between the San Francisco / San Mateo County Line and Holloway Ave, was completed back in late March and early April. The northern portion, approximately two miles in length, between Lincoln Way at the southern entrance of Golden Gate Park and Lake Street in the Richmond District by the entrance into the General Douglas MacArthur Tunnel, was completed shortly after. Several months of this work was fast tracked as Caltrans was able to take advantage of the lower traffic volume during the city's shelter-in-place ordinance. Work was adjusted to the daytime (and some weekend) hours, however, when recent traffic counts progressively resumed to 'normal conditions' during June 2020, roadwork was shifted back to the overnight hours. Additional safety improvement work was completed back in July 2019. Caltrans replaced the median barrier in Golden Gate Park between Crossover Drive and Fulton St. The new barrier is now taller, blocking the glare from oncoming traffic and headlights and stronger as the old barrier was worn by years of weather and traffic collisions. Caltrans also repaired, replaced, and upgraded various drainage pipes and curb ramps in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). As Caltrans is nearing the completion of this one-year, $15 million project, having started back in May 2019, crews are wrapping up all scheduled work on State Route 1 by January 2021.
