State Route 4 Old River Bridge Additional Maintenance

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to preserve the Old River Bridge (Number 29-0045) on post mile 0.01 at the San Joaquin and Contra Costa County line on State Route 4. Preserving the bridge would include a polyester concrete overlay and painting the bridge. The old timber waling and the fenders on the north side of Pier 3 would be replaced, and the south side of Pier 2 would be supported with new high-density polyethylene walers mounted to the existing timber piles. An abandoned Caltrans-owned one-car garage on the southwest levee would be removed. The approach rail on both sides of the bridge would be replaced with the current standard Midwest Guardrail System.
