Description

Description

This project will improve station systems and infrastructure on the SkyTrain network to meet safety, access/egress, and operational requirements. As part of its 10-Year Investment Plan, TransLink has initiated an expansion of the Expo and Millennium stations to support larger 5-car trains (being acquired under the Expo and Millenium Upgrade Program), which can transport larger volumes of riders. These longer 85 metre trains and the corresponding increase in ridership exceed the capacity of many stations in the network with 80 metre platforms. The Station Access and Safety Project (SASP) will address critical safety and access risks at and around stations. The scope of this project includes the rehabilitation and expansion of station components as follows: - Modify the Guideway Intrusion Monitoring System where it would be blocked by the new trains to maintain capacity to detect individuals accessing the guideway (approximately 52 platforms in 27 stations); - Extend guideway walkways that would be blocked by the 5-car trains to allow attendant access (approximately 31 guideway walkways in 16 stations); - Modify Automatic Train Control systems which would be blocked by the longer 5-car trains; - Add infrastructure (e.g. additional stairs) where required to ensure stations can meet TransLink’s 4-minute standard for emergency egress given greater passenger loading of 5-car trains; and - Modify approximately 50 platforms in 25 stations to reduce gaps in compliance with TransLink standards for riders with disabilities. The project also includes technical and system integration to ensure the trains can operate within the stations. The Project is critical to safely operate longer trains on the SkyTrain network.
