The proposal describes two main research activities that enable the production of relevant information on family businesses in NL: creating a dedicated BR for FB and production of regional information. So far information on FB in the Netherlands is rather minimal and mainly qualitative by nature. The research activities described in this grant will contribute to setting up an infrastructure at Statistics Netherlands with which statistical information on family businesses can be generated on a regular basis. Morover, the resulting information will be quantitative and regional by nature. For this purpose WP1 focuses on investigating data sources that can be used to identify family businesses in the business register. Subsequently the information in these data sources is linked to the business register, thereby creating a specific BR form family businesses. This dedicated BR acts as a backbone in producing statistics on family businesses. In WP2 research is conducted to obtain regional information on family businesses. This research includes developing distribution keys which are required to produce regional figures, but also focuses on linking the BR of family businesses to specific datasources. Issues with definitions, units etc need to be solved in this WP. If successful the research conducted provides a business register that can be used for the production of family businesses. So far no statistical information has been produced by CBS on this topic. In addition, the results of linking the BR to a variety of datasets will provide a substantial amount of information that is complementary to studies performed previously.
