The EBRD is considering providing a senior loan of up to EUR 45 million to Société Tunisienne de l’Electricité et du Gaz ( “STEG” or the “Company”), the Tunisian state-owned electricity and gas utility company, to finance STEG’s participation in ELMED project (the “Project”). The Project entails the realisation of a new bidirectional HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) submarine electricity interconnection between Tunisia (Cap-Bon) and Italy (Sicily), with a transmission capacity of 600 MW. The project is promoted and will be carried out by TERNA (Italian Electricity Transmission System Operator) and STEG. The overall objective of the project is to increase the interconnection capacity -and thus the security and sustainability of supply of the Euro-Mediterranean system by creating a link between the European and Northern African energy systems.
