Description | The Sterling Highway is a highway project that connects Seward and the central Kenai Peninsula to Homer and Kachemak Bay. It was dedicated in 1950 and named in honor of Hawley Winchell Sterling. The highway improved access for agriculture, commercial fishermen, homesteaders, and opened up potential tourist and sportsmen developments. Construction began in 1946 and a rough road was completed south to the Kenai River by 1948 despite challenges such as the Kenai Burn in 1947. |
