Description
Description | Opportunity Over the next 30 years Calgary’s bus fleet is expected to double from 1,000 buses to over 2,000. Additionally, in 2011 Calgary Transit was directed by City Council to consider incorporating compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles into the regular transit bus fleet of the basis of operational cost savings and environmental benefits. In March 2013 a pilot project incorporating four CNG vehicles into the transit fleet began. The City recognized that a new transit bus storage and maintenance facility would be required to meet operational needs and growth and was included in the recommended list of projects in the Investing in Mobility capital plan adopted by Council in December 2012. In July 2014 it was announced that the federal government would support the project with $48.4 million of funding from PPP Canada. Results The new facility is capable of housing 424 buses and will have 36 maintenance bays, two steam bays, and on-site compressed natural gas fueling infrastructure. The facility supports diesel bus operation recognizing the transition period needed to introduce CNG buses into Transit’s fleet. The facility is built in accordance with the City’s Sustainable Building Polic and incorporate Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles. The project has direct environmental benefits as a result of operational efficiencies and a reduction in the number of buses stored outside. “This is an important investment in Calgary transit that will have significant benefits for Calgarians. Natural gas can be less expensive and have a lower environmental impact than diesel fuel, and natural gas buses can be quieter and more reliable than their diesel counterparts. Moreover, this is a great opportunity to showcase Canada’s natural gas industry right here in Calgary.” - Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary |
