Strait of Messina Bridge Project

The project involves the construction of the world's longest single-span bridge, linking Sicily to the Italian mainland. The 3.7-kilometre structure aims to boost development in Italy's poorer southern regions and is planned to be completed by 2032. The project includes surrounding facilities and has a budget of 13.5 billion euros over 10 years. It has faced opposition due to environmental, financial, and safety concerns but has been approved by the Italian government and the Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development (CIPESS). Preliminary works such as archaeological and geological surveys will start soon, with land expropriations authorized. The project was awarded to the Eurolink consortium led by Webuild, including Spanish group Sacyr and Japan's IHI.
