Strait of Messina Bridge

An £11 billion mega-project to build the world's longest suspension bridge linking mainland Italy with Sicily. The bridge will have a suspended deck hanging from cables between two towers 399 metres tall, with a main span of 3,300 metres. It will be multimodal, including six lanes of road traffic, two railway tracks, emergency lanes, service lanes, and pedestrian walkways, expected to handle up to 6,000 vehicles per hour and around 200 trains per day. The bridge will sit 72 metres above sea level to allow large ships to pass underneath.
