Strange Lake Rare Earth Mining Project

planned

The Strange Lake project is a proposed rare earth mining operation near Lac Brisson in Nunavik, northern Quebec. The mine aims to extract up to 13 million metric tonnes of material annually for 30 years, with plans to build a 170-kilometre road to the Labrador coast and ship the rare earth elements to a proposed French-owned processing plant in Sept-Îles, Quebec. The project is significant due to its heavy rare earth elements, including dysprosium and terbium, which are critical for manufacturing magnets used in electric vehicles, fighter jets, and missiles. The Canadian government has committed $175 million to support the project, highlighting its strategic importance.
