The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) is an independent public administration institution under the supervision of the Cabinet of Ministers, as well as a pre-trial investigatory body with traditional police powers, that performs functions, inter alia, in the field of corruption prevention and combating, and is the leading specialized anti-corruption authority of Latvia. KNAB investigates criminal offenses committed in public administration services, particularly active and passive bribery, violation of restrictions imposed on public officials and influence peddling, including cases regarding money laundering and fraud (financial fraud schemes). It is therefore important and necessary to update KNAB equipment in order to carry out effective and efficient investigatory activities. The purchase of the sought equipment, as well specialised training in the use thereof, will strengthen the ability of KNAB to more effectively combat and prevent domestic and foreign bribery, as well as fraud in EU financial instruments. The project is expected to strengthen the fight against corruption, fraud and other illegal activities by providing KNAB (as well as other law-enforcement authorities and international cooperation partner institutions) with modern equipment that would enable analysts to analyse big data and find discrepancies or hidden actions which would serve as basis for further scrutinized research and detection and prevention of corruption thus protecting the financial interests of the EU.
