Description | In the Karamoja region in northern Uganda, livestock farming and rain-fed agriculture are an essential basis for the people living there in a traditional way and for the economic development of the region. Extreme natural events such as drought and heavy rain, as well as an advancing agricultural front and increasing cross-border migration mean that the number of livestock farmers who are losing their traditional production base and thus their livelihood is constantly growing. The consequences of climate change are a factor in this problem. In this area, the German government is financing measures in the area of the development cooperation priority of rural development and food security. This is intended to strengthen the population's resilience to extreme natural events. In addition, their nutritional base and employment and income opportunities are secured. The target group is the indigenous agro-pastoral and pastoral population living in the Karamoja sub-region, including the migrating nomads from Kenya and South Sudan. KfW is working closely with GIZ and the Ministry of Water and Environment in Uganda. Overall, the FC module aims to contribute to the national implementation of Agenda 2030, with particular emphasis on the SDGs (1) poverty reduction, (2) food security, (8) economic growth, (13) climate resilience, (15) rural life and (16) peace. |
