Strengthening social fabric with a new gymnasium

The Waśniów primary and middle school complex, which are centrally located in the town, plays a major role in the social fabric of the community and serves as part of the community’s core infrastructure.But to maintain its role as the hub of the community, new additions were needed. In particular, the complex lacked the suitable sports facilities required to enhance regional cooperation and increase sports competition.Construction of new complexTo remedy this gap, a new gymnastics hall was constructed at the complex. The facility is 1 557.10 square metres and can serve multiple uses, including inter-communal and multi-school competition.The community took advantage of the gymnasium construction to also take care of some other overdue renovations. For example, new facilities for the school library, including a reading room, were also built. Outside, a set of sports fields, 4 682 square metres in total, were constructed. The façade of the primary and middle school complex underwent a 1 691.20 square metre renovation, and a new roof over the entrance way was also added.Benefitting the entire communityEveryone in the community takes advantage of the complex. Each year an inauguration ceremony is held in the complex at the beginning of the school year. Annual observances are also organised like Independence day and Constitution day, but also local anniversaries and events such as ‘children’s day’, ‘grandmother’s day’, ‘grandfather’s day’, and ‘national reading day’, along with the annual graduation ceremonies.Apart from the school’s programme of events, football, volleyball, basketball, tennis and table tennis contests are organised at the complex. The complex is also open daily to adults.Total investment and EU fundingTotal investment for the project “Creation of a municipal sports and education centre at Primary School and Middle School in Waśniów by the construction of the Gymnastics Hall, sports grounds and facilities for the School Library” was EUR 1 566 365, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 939 819 from the Operation Programme “Świętokrzyskie” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
