Description | The overall project objective is to promote judicial cooperation in criminal matters and mutual trust, through addressing fundamental rights issues related to LGBTIQ detainees, i.e. lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer persons. The project focuses on mapping the existing legal and policy framework applicable to LGBTIQ detainees in the EU (with specific emphasis on the EC Rec (C(2022) 8987); identifying challenges and promising practices regarding detention conditions, treatment and care of LGBTIQ detainees; facilitating and strengthening exchange and mutual learning as well as raising awareness and capacity of the relevant stakeholders on the specific situation of LGBTIQ detainees. The project will mainly target 4 Member States (Austria, Greece, Hungary, Italy), but also envisages EU-wide activities (e.g. regional research, regional consultation workshop, final launch event) to create EU-wide impact. The target groups comprise representatives of civil society, LGBTIQ persons with lived experience of detention, lawyers, NHRIs and NPMs, representatives of the judiciary, prison staff, prison authorities and policymakers. The final beneficiaries of this project are LGBTIQ detainees in the EU. Short-term impact -Improved quantity and quality of information available on the situation of LGBTIQ detainees in the EU, incl. identifying challenges, promising practices and recommendations -Network building, strengthened cooperation and exchange among diverse stakeholders across the EU Medium-term impact -Increased awareness among policymakers at the national and EU level and other relevant stakeholders -Fostering research, trainings, and other activities which build on the findings Long-term impact -Improved situation of LGBTIQ detainees in the EU, reduced risks of fundamental rights violations, improved material detention conditions -Strengthening mutual trust and efficient and fundamental rights compliant judicial cooperation among EU national authorities |
