The StAR (Students at Risk) project is a global initiative focused on supporting students and scholars who are at risk due to political persecution, conflict, or other threats to their academic freedom. The project promotes and supports the EU Fundamental Right of academic freedom by raising awareness about and advocating for politically persecuted students and scholars at risk. This is achieved through capacity building, research, seminars, summer school, network building, and supporting national initiatives on Academic Freedom. The project aims to create a network of universities, organisations, and advocates to offer support, raise awareness, and develop strategies for the protection and inclusion of at-risk students in higher education. This includes providing advocacy initiatives, and academic opportunities for displaced students and scholars, ensuring that they have access to education and can continue their academic work in a safe environment. StAR collaborates with various stakeholders, including universities, international organisations, and student movements, to promote academic freedom, human rights, and the protection of students and scholars globally. The project also works to foster long-term solutions and policies to support at-risk individuals, ensuring their inclusion and security within the global academic community.
