Description | The Subansiri Lower Hydro-Electric Project is a 2000-MW hydel power project located on the Arunachal-Assam border. It was conceived as India's largest hydel project and started in 2005. The project faced suspensions due to local resistance and court cases related to dam safety and ecological concerns. It has experienced significant cost overruns, increasing the project cost from Rs 6,285 crores in 2002 to approximately Rs 26,000 crores currently. Three of eight 250MW units have commenced commercial operation. The project supplies power to northeastern states with allocations including firm, free, and unallocated central shares. Assam and Meghalaya have refused to purchase power beyond their allocated shares due to high tariffs and surplus power availability. |
