Description
Description | Core problem Rapid growth rates in urban areas pose enormous challenges for Benin's water supply. The accentuated, rapid growth of the cities in the immediate vicinity of Cotonou has led to precarious supply situations, particularly in the outskirts. The undersupply of the population of Benin with hygienically safe drinking water represents a key obstacle to development for Benin and the project region. Module objective The aim of the FC module is to ensure a sustainable, year-round, sufficient supply of hygienically safe drinking water to the population living in the outskirts of the program region. Key outputs Phase I of the project promotes the rehabilitation, expansion and densification of the water supply networks in the entire Abomey-Calavi-Cotonou-Sèmè-Kpodji-Porto-Novo metropolitan area, the expansion of water extraction in Porto-Novo and the Ouando water treatment plant, and the increase in the number of private water connections. Target group The target group of the project is the population of the selected peri-urban areas in the Abomey-Calavi-Cotonou-Sèmè-Kpodji-Porto-Novo metropolitan area who do not yet benefit from a drinking water supply or who do not benefit from it. By consolidating and expanding the existing water supply systems, capacities are created that will enable up to an additional 230,000 people to have improved access to a drinking water connection.
