Sudbury-Hudson Transmission Reliability Project and Mass Central Rail Trail Section

The project involved the installation of a 9-mile underground transmission line between Eversource’s Sudbury substation and the Hudson Light and Power substation, strengthening electric system reliability for Greater Boston. About 7.6 miles of the line were placed along an inactive Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority railroad corridor, creating a base for the new 7.5-mile section of the Mass Central Rail Trail. The trail section adds walking, running, and biking opportunities and includes amenities such as road crossings, benches, signage, landscaping, and the restored Diamond Junction. The trail segment runs through the Wayside corridor from Hudson through Stow to Sudbury and is part of a broader trail planned to connect 26 communities across 104 miles from Boston to Northampton.
