The Second Sumitomo Steel Project for Japan is an additional project for extending the range and quality of its welded pipes and providing it with the necessary flat products for pipe manufacture. Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd is one of the major steel companies in Japan. This second program is aimed at a) expanding ingot steel capacity to 20.5 million tons by 1962; b) installing facilities to allow the industry to meet the demands for higher quality and wider range of products; and c) modernizing the mills in order to reduce operating costs. If Japan is to maintain its competitive position it must continue to keep pace with the U.S. and European industries in productivity, quality, and efficiency; this will involve continued substantial investments in modern facilities.
