Description
Description | SunCycle – El Paso’s first bike share program offers a fleet of 160 red, standard bikes, and 16 white, electric bikes (e-bikes). The new e-bikes cost $2,400 per unit and rent for the same price as SunCycle's regular bikes (i.e., $6 for a 24-hour pass, and $75 for an annual membership for unlimited rides). Riders can make payments using credit or debit cards through SunCycle's 15 kiosks, where bikes are parked, or through a third-party vendor phone app that offers daily, weekly, monthly, and annual passes. The kiosks are Downtown and in and near the UTEP campus in West Central El Paso. Launched in 2015 by CRRMA with 80 bikes and eight stations that linked downtown El Paso to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) campus, SunCycle serves as an innovative program that meets the area’s transportation and environmental needs by giving residents an affordable, no-hassle way to commute that eliminates emissions. In 2016, the program expanded to include 80 additional bikes and seven new stations. By November 2016, the program had accounted for more than 16,000 rides taken, or 84,000 miles ridden. Riders had burned more than 3.3 million calories and eliminated nearly 80,000 pounds of carbon emissions. SunCycle is funded through grants, sponsorships, partnerships, and donations, as well as ride memberships and user fees that cover operations and equipment. In 2019, the program generated $90,000 in sponsorships. |
