Description
Description | Opportunity Sunnybrook Hospital needed to expand its capacity after the provincial government decided to relocate the Perinatal and Gynecology program from Women’s College Hospital to Sunnybrook’s Bayview Avenue campus. In 2001 a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) was issued seeking for a private sector partner to build four additional floors on top of the M-Wing at the Sunnybrook Campus to house Ontario’s most critically-ill newborns and women with high-risk pregnancies. Challenges Expanding the hospital vertically while continuing to operate the floors below involved construction of temporary weather protection to prepare for removal of skylights in the M Wing lobby, pedestrian protection, and demolition of the roof over top of the Imaging Research Centre for Cardiac Intervention (IRCCI). Innovations Vanbots was required to finance the construction of the project until the facility was turned over to Sunnybrook. The project documents outlined that the builder was responsible for all increased financing costs resulting from any builder delay in reaching substantial completion, shifting significant risk for late delivery to the private sector. Results The Sunnybrook M Wing expansion project, which remains publicly owned, controlled and accountable, was completed on-time and on-budget. More than 120,000 square feet of new space provides room for the Women and Babies Program, which has a capacity of 68 beds and 48 bassinets—an increase of ten and 17 per cent, respectively from the previous facility. Sunnybrook now manages approximately 4,250 births a year, an increase of 15 per cent. A state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is also located in the new facilities— the program cares for one in five babies weighing less than three pounds at birth in Ontario. A galleria now links the old M-Wing and the expansion project. The expansion includes a Breast Feeding Clinic and other support services, providing women and newborns with more comprehensive healthcare. |
