The Sunset Seniors Centre project (the Project) aims to expand the existing Sunset Community Centre by approximately 10,000 square feet to maximize operational and programming efficiencies. Project works include: • A large event and dining multipurpose room; • Two medium flexible activity multipurpose rooms; • Fitness oriented multipurpose room; • Small flexible multipurpose room; • Commercial kitchen; • Lobby/café; • Lounge; • Support spaces including reception, office, programmer office, storage, washrooms and service rooms; and • Outdoor spaces for gathering, gardening and walking (walking loop). The senior’s population in South Vancouver/Sunset is diverse, comprising a wide range of ages, interest, abilities, cultures and languages; making it a challenge for seniors centres to effectively meet the needs of the entire population. The projected significant increase in the seniors population, current lack of capacity in facilities and programs, and feedback from community members, staff and stakeholders all indicate that there is a need for a new seniors centre in South Vancouver/Sunset. Having a Seniors Centre in the neighbourhood will allow for the community of seniors to enjoy the cultural identity of the neighborhood and to feel at home as they proudly share their culture and language. This Project will support improved access to and/or increased quality of community, cultural, and/or recreational infrastructure.
