Core problem The situation in Mali, especially in the north, is still largely shaped by the aftermath of the 2012/2013 crisis and the increasing invasion of Islamic extremists. Increasing agricultural production and creating jobs play a key role in the development of northern Mali. This is where the project comes in through the construction and management of irrigation infrastructure in Gao and Ménaka. Module objective Contribution to the use of the economic potential of small-scale irrigation for sustainable and profitable agriculture as well as increased food security and thus stability in the respective target regions (here specifically Gao and Ménaka). Key outputs The number of irrigation perimeters, newly developed natural depressions, horticultural perimeters, warehouses and transport barges is to be increased, thus promoting agricultural production. Target group The direct target group of the FC measure is the rural population in the project regions of Gao and Ménaka, who live in absolute poverty. Young people are the largest group looking for work in Mali and therefore benefit particularly from agricultural investments. This also applies to Malian women, who are crucial for the diversification of household income and food. Contribution to the national implementation of Agenda 2030 The measures contribute in particular to the goal of ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture for sustainable development.
