Support for the transition process in Chad (UNDP - basket funding)

Given the fragile situation in Chad and the limited capacities of state institutions, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is supporting the country in implementing a credible, inclusive and peaceful transition process and has set up a basket financing scheme through which various donors can finance the support of this process. The German contribution, which is to be paid into the basket via KfW, amounts to EUR 5 million. All activities and measures to be financed through the basket financing will be implemented directly by UNDP and are assigned to the three components of the project (1.) supporting an inclusive national dialogue, drafting a new constitution, and organizing and holding a referendum on the constitution and national presidential and parliamentary elections; (2.) involving armed opposition groups in the dialogue process, disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of ex-combatants; and (3) the involvement and strengthening of civil society, especially women, young people, people with disabilities and other marginalized groups, including through subsidies for civil society organizations and strengthening the media to adequately report on the transition process. UNDP estimates the total cost of the necessary support measures to be US$67.8 million. UNDP itself is contributing to the financing of the basket. Other donors have already announced their intention to support the transition process in Chad through the UNDP basket.
