Description
Description | The aim of the training measure is to contribute to improving the food situation of the population groups affected by the drought and - as a medium-term effective measure - to strengthen resilience for future drought periods and to keep drought-related school closures for teachers and students as low as possible. The target group are the vulnerable population groups in Mozambique affected by the food shortage caused by the drought caused by El Niño. The main measures include 1.) Food for Assets and strengthening resilience (approx. EUR 10 million) The population groups most affected work on the construction of smaller village infrastructure measures that improve resilience to droughts (e.g. cisterns). In return, food is made available. The German financial contribution will reach around 150,000 people in the particularly affected provinces, currently Tete, Sofala, Gaza, Manica, Maputo, Inhambane and Zambezia, and strengthen local structures by building capacity. 2.) Development of systematic planning for resilience measures (approx. EUR 0.2 million) Analyses will be carried out at national level and partners will be enabled to plan multi-sectoral activities at regional and local level in a participatory manner. The German financial contribution will enable the actors to implement the participatory planning approach by participating in corresponding programs in three districts. This will also serve to prepare the infrastructure measures in the Food for Assets program. 3.) School meals (approx. EUR 2.8 million) In the worst-affected provinces, the drought has had a major impact on the participation of children and teachers in school lessons. Since 2015, WEP has been providing school meals for children and teachers in the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane and Tete, which has already led to a significant increase in the attendance of students and teachers in class. The extension and possible expansion of the program with the help of the German financial contribution will reach at least 97,000 students and 3,000 teachers. |
