The objectives of the action are to: 1. improve the protection of VMEs in the SPFRMO Convention area from bottom fishing. The first objective will build on previous works conducted over several years to prevent the occurrence of significant adverse impacts on Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs). Much of the technical work supporting the development of bottom fishing measures in SPRFMO has been led by Australia and New Zealand. EU scientists have been activity involved in those works and the EU proactively promotes the improvement of bottom fishing measures adopted by SPRFMO ensuring such measures are are consistent with the relevant provisions in UNGA Resolutions 61/105 and 64/72. 2. ensure the sustainable management of jack mackerel stock. The second objective will build on previous works to continue to develop and update SPRFMOs management of the Jack mackerel fishery. The Jack mackerel fishery is one of the most important stocks in the South Pacific Ocean. Currently 10 SPRFMO Members (including the EU) hold quota in the fishery. The quota is regularly traded amongst the Members, and this represents an important opportunity to develop mutual trust and enhance cooperation both within EU States and externally with other SPRFMO Members. The current TAC for the fishery throughout its entire range is 900 000 tonnes of which the EU is eligible for a share of 6.1086%. SPRFMO Members with a direct interest in the Jack mackerel fishery include Chile, China, Cuba, Ecuador, the EU, the Kingdom of Denmark (in respect of the Faroe Islands), Korea, Peru, the Russian Federation and Vanuatu. This project will represent a visible action by the EU to enhance SPRFMOs ability to ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of fisheries resources while continuing to safeguard the marine ecosystems in which these resources occur.
