Supporting climate adaptation measures at local level in Rwanda

The FC project promotes the implementation of climate adaptation measures at the local level through the Rwandan environmental and climate fund FONERWA, which selects relevant and effective individual projects based on project applications from the districts. This supports an innovative national financing mechanism in Rwanda that promotes projects to implement Rwanda's climate and environmental strategies and at the same time pools resources for environmental protection in order to achieve the greatest possible impact and to measure this in a coordinated manner across the country. The aim of the project is to increase resilience to the consequences of climate change and to ensure the sustainable socio-economic development of Rwanda. The development/planning and implementation of the measures by the districts will, on the one hand, ensure that they are directly geared to local needs, and, on the other hand, in complementarity with the joint program to support decentralization, the districts' capacities to integrate climate adaptation as standard in local development plans and projects will be strengthened in the long term. The target group of the project is the population of Rwanda in the 30 districts who are affected by the consequences of climate change and depend on the sustainable use of natural resources. A FC contribution of EUR 6.7 million is planned to finance the individual projects on climate adaptation and to strengthen climate-related institutional capacities at the local level.
