Supporting the Activate! Leadership Youth Development Program

The project is a youth development project that is being carried out nationwide in South Africa by the DG Murray Trust (DGMT) on behalf of the South African Ministry of Health. Activate! is a network of currently around 2,000 adolescents and young adults (activators) who are being trained in a multi-stage leadership training course. The aim of the FZ measure is to reduce risk tolerance among the activators and those around them and to create economic and personal development prospects for adolescents and young adults through participation in the Activate! program and/or the local initiatives that arise from it. The target group of the project is, on the one hand, the so-called activators (primary target group). These are socially committed, young South Africans between the ages of 20 and 30 who have already finished school and are role models for their peers in their communities. Activators initiate their own development projects in their communities, in which they involve their peers. On the other hand, other adolescents and young adults (secondary target group) will benefit from the increased commitment of the Activators through forms of personal-communicative prevention and will also become involved in their communities themselves. The individual measures of the project consist of a multi-stage leadership training (Activate! core training program) for the Activators and accompanying measures in the form of support services such as the development of a nationwide social network to promote the exchange of ideas among the Activators, various event forums at local and national level for interaction with social and political decision-makers, as well as campaigns on television and radio to increase the awareness and effectiveness of the Activate! network nationwide. Support for Activate! was previously a component within the two FC projects HIV Prevention I & II with a total FC volume of EUR 5 million and is now to be continued as an independent project with the new commitment. The FC share for the project amounts to EUR 7 million with an estimated total duration of around five years. In addition, the sponsoring organization DGMT is expected to make a contribution of around EUR 3.33 million (R 50 million). This brings the total cost of the project to around EUR 10.33 million.
