Description

Description

The project provides balanced meals for school children and strengthens local production and nutrition systems in Sudan. The situation of the population is extremely tense. Almost half of the people are affected by severe food insecurity, including many children. Local food production systems are weak and vulnerable to shocks, and many farmers are not yet able to grow crops in line with demand. As part of the project, school children receive regular meals. Small farmers are also enabled to supply schools in line with demand. The provision of school meals is intended to give families an incentive to enable their children to attend school regularly, and the cognitive and physical development of children is also intended to improve the development of human capital in the country in the long term. Working with small farmers and other local actors (traders, transporters, processors, etc.) and connecting them to local schools as buyers of the products is intended to improve their access to markets and increase their income. There is also the potential to reduce the dependence of the school nutrition system on imports in this way. The project is being implemented by WFP and financed with EUR 20 million. This will reach approximately 710,000 schoolchildren and 18,000 small farmers in a total of 25 districts in 6 federal states of Sudan.
