Supporting vulnerable populations affected by drought in Ethiopia

The ÜH project supports the Public Works component of the Ethiopian government's Productive Safety Net Programme (PSNP). This aims to improve the resilience of eight million people in Ethiopia who suffer from chronic food insecurity. In the Public Works component, the affected population works on smaller, public infrastructure projects, e.g. for environmental protection and the construction of productive and social infrastructure facilities (including soil and water protection, forestry and agroforestry, rural road construction and water supply). As part of the ÜH measure outlined here, the WEP provides the population with food rations in return for participation in public infrastructure projects. The German financial contribution will provide around 416,000 people with around 18,802 tonnes of food. Around 80% of this will be distributed as part of the Public Works component and 20% to households that cannot work and therefore receive the food without making any advance payment.
