Description
Description | India is considered the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. At the same time, the country is characterized by continued high population growth, increasing urbanization and a disproportionately high growth in individual motorization. This is due to increasing prosperity and inadequate local public transport (LPT) offerings. As one of the largest energy consumers in the country, the transport sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. To counteract this trend, the Indian government is committed to expanding public transport in medium to large cities. The Surat Metro project is part of this initiative. The city of Surat in the state of Gujarat, which has a population of one million, is one of the fastest growing cities in India. Public transport in Surat has not been able to keep up with the city's high economic and population growth, and the transport system is already overloaded with negative effects on the climate, human health and economic productivity. Against this background, a metro system consisting of two intersecting lines with a total length of 40.35 km, 38 stations and two depots is to be built in the city of Surat. The metro will be built mainly above (main) roads in an elevated manner. In the central old town area, the metro will run underground for a length of 6.47 km. The integration of the metro with other forms of transport and the expansion of the infrastructure in the vicinity of the metro stations are also part of the project. The aim of the project is to increase and sustain the use of an energy-efficient, integrated public transport system in Surat. The direct target group consists of the users of the metro and the people who also use the improved infrastructure in the catchment area of the stations independently of the metro. The indirect target group is the entire population of Surat, who will benefit from the expected positive climate and health effects as well as the increased economic productivity. The project sponsor is the state-owned Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC). The project is co-financed with the Agence Francaise de Developpment (AFD). In addition to the FC development loan, the project is also financed under the FC programs Climate-Friendly Urban Mobility Phase II and III. |
