Description
Description | City of Surrey is committed to adapting to the ongoing effects of climate change through the design and construction of resilient and environmentally friendly infrastructure. In the last decade, Surrey has invested considerable resources in identifying the most flood vulnerable areas within its existing flood plains and has identified this segment of dyke to be at risk of overtopping. Climate change-driven increase in rainfall intensity and frequency, further demands significant dyke upgrades to meet the storm frequency levels that will cause costly dyke over-topping and dyke breaches in the coming years. The proposed project aims at enhancing the flood resilience within a dyke segment ranked as a segment of major consequence (appendix iv - NHC 2021) in the face of increased flooding frequencies and intensities (appendix iii - NHC 2015). The proposed works includes the replacement of three flood boxes and rehabilitation of two spillways, and rehabilitating the dyke crest by adding approximately 300mm of fill to approximately 2 km of dyke on the north bank of the Nicomekl River between 16900 Blk and 184 St. This work will involve surveying, trucking, loading, unloading, placing and compacting dyke fill, construction of temporary access roads, installation of concrete headwalls and flood conveyance infrastructure, erosion control work, ground preparation and surface restoration. By rehabilitating the dyke, floodboxes and spillways increased flood control for the following assets: - Over 1km of Hwy 15, a regional link to Pacific Highway Border - Over 400 ha of agricultural lands - Portion of 48th Ave - Over 40 buildings (homes, barns etc.) -Portion of 184th Street and other transportation links -0.5km section of Roberts Bank Railway corridor (BC Railway) |
