The forthcoming Surrey Langley SkyTrain (SLS) project plans to extend the existing Expo Line SkyTrain by 16 kms on an elevated guideway from King George Station to Langley City Centre along Fraser Highway. The City of Surrey Road Work project (the Project) will contribute to and provide advancement of the SLS project, mitigating potential schedule and financial risks by preventing schedule delays. This Project is part of Phase 1, which involves the planning and advanced works, while Stage 2 will contain early works, and Stage 3 is the construction of the physical rail line. The proposed Project includes widening Fraser Highway from 2 lanes to 4 lanes for 2.3 km between 138 and 148 street, to add the additional width needed for the future SkyTrain guideway. Completing the work for the City of Surrey roadwork piece at this stage will support project timelines and reduce financial and schedule risks for the SLS project. TransLink previously submitted an application of a 7 km SLS line to Fleetwood in the City of Surrey, but was withdrawn as the full project was not yet ready for approval. The SLS project now includes the scope to extend the 16 km to Langley City Centre, and will apply for Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program funding in stages. The Project will result in the improved capacity of public transit infrastructure.
