The Susitna-Watana Hydroelectric Project is a large-scale hydroelectric project proposed to serve the Railbelt electric grid in Alaska, which stretches from Homer to Fairbanks. The project aims to generate approximately 2.5 to 3 million megawatt-hours annually, potentially displacing 60 to 80 percent of gas-fired electricity generation on the Railbelt. It would strengthen grid reliability, enable integration of renewable energy sources, and support electrification of heating and transportation. The project has faced delays and was shelved, but recent changes in energy landscape, federal tax credits, and demand outlook suggest reconsideration. The Alaska Energy Authority has ceased active efforts but is archiving studies and could test private-sector interest through requests for information or proposals.
