Description

Description

The aim of the program is to ensure food security and to generate income through the production, processing and marketing of agricultural products. By tapping into agricultural potential and intensifying agricultural production in the floodplains, the project helps to reduce rural poverty in the program area (southwest). The target group is the rural population in the area around the floodplains in the southwest and in the province of Sissili. The measures to enhance the value of the floodplains consist of building (stone) sills with/without dams, which enable better and more intensive use of the agricultural potential through irrigated agriculture. In addition to access roads and road construction measures to improve market connections for the affected villages, grain silos are financed, which enable safer storage and stockpiling of grain. Accompanying measures in the form of training and advice support the farmers' groups in the preparatory phase of the development of the floodplains in organizing and making their own contribution to the project. After construction work is completed, agricultural production, processing and marketing as well as the maintenance of the irrigation systems will be supported for a further two years as part of the project and the organizational/institutional capacities of the local management committees will be strengthened. The farmers' groups will then be able to carry out these tasks independently and, in particular, ensure the maintenance of the systems.
