Description

Description

The fight against anti-Muslim hatred has been gathered momentum of late. Various initiatives include the EU Anti-Racism Action Plan (2020-2025); those sponsored by the EU Commission’s coordinator on combatting anti-Muslim hatred alongside multifarious efforts of EU based civil society actors. SALAAM builds on and complements these initiatives. Focusing on Muslim communities as a case study of diversity, SALAAM will utilise legislative and policy developments in Ireland designed specifically to combat racism as a springboard from which to fight anti-Muslim hatred through Local Authority staff training and education, improved supports for those who experience anti-Muslim hatred, sustainable participation platforms and public awareness campaigns. SALAAM will address the scope of this call by raising awareness of and challenges to anti-Muslim hatred in Ireland, working with Local Authorities in four cities, namely Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. This will take the form of training initiatives, policy and practice changes with Local Authorities in these cities on the topic of engaging with Muslim communities and fighting anti-Muslim hatred. SALAAM will also focus on the development of recording of experiences of anti-Muslim hatred to public authorities while also advising victims on follow-on supports, both of which will have the effect of fostering greater reporting by victims. In addition to receiving reports, data collection practices vis-à-vis reports of anti-Muslim hatred will also be developed with Local Authorities. Finally, SALAAM will work to challenge negative stereotypical representations of Muslim communities through public awareness campaigns with similar efforts to be undertaken within Muslim communities vis-à-vis their rights under law in the changing legislative and policy context. Utilising an action research methodology, SALAAM will be undertaken in partnership with Muslim communities in the four cities included in this proposal.
