Sustainable Artificial Intelligence for Regulation

The Centre explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the regulatory cycle and aims to raise awareness of its environmental impacts and to provide public authorities with criteria to adopt sustainable AI. Specifically, it seeks to: (1) identify how AI can support regulators and enforcement authorities while assessing the risks it poses to the rule of law and the environment; (2) develop a methodology for evaluating the environmental impact of AI applications and infrastructures; and (3) establish sustainability criteria for the in-house development and outsourcing of AI in regulatory contexts. These goals are pursued through structured activities, including stakeholder engagement via two Open Fora and Annual Contests on innovation and sustainability in regulation. The Centre also prioritizes capacity building and education through three specialized courses designed for graduate students, PhD candidates, Erasmus and post-graduate students, as well as regulators and professionals from the private sector. It also facilitates hands-on experience for students in training through dedicated internship agreements. To engage civil society and academia, the Centre promotes transnational collaboration and dissemination efforts such as an edited book on its core topic, annual academic issues based on identified good practices on sustainable AI, a publicly accessible Transparency Register —regularly updated— on AI applications in the regulatory cycle within a dedicated website, as well as a quarterly newsletter, LinkedIn posts, and expert interviews in podcast episodes. The Centre aims to advance knowledge in European Union studies while fostering interdisciplinary and international collaboration. Its methodological approach integrates expertise from various disciplines, including law, economics, statistics, data science, and environmental studies.
