Sustainable climate protection - mobility

Due to the rapid urbanization in Brazil, around 87% of the Brazilian population now lives in cities. Public transport systems play a key role in determining the level of economic productivity in these cities, the quality of living conditions of residents and their access to jobs and government services. Inadequate public transport systems and services are the cause of increasing volumes of private motorized traffic, environmental pollution, high greenhouse gas emissions and considerable costs for economic actors. For the sustainable development of Brazil, it is therefore crucial to use scarce energy resources in a needs-based and efficient manner using adapted forms of technology for public transport services, thereby reducing the impact on the environment and climate at the same time. An FC development loan of up to EUR 100 million to the Brazilian state development bank BNDES (Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social) is intended to promote sustainable urban mobility systems in up to two cities with a population of more than 500,000 inhabitants in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from urban transport and to make a contribution to climate protection and sustainable urban development.
