Description
Description | Tanzania's nature reserves are of global importance for biodiversity and contribute around 10% to Tanzania's GDP. Well-known ecosystems such as the Serengeti National Park play a central role in this. However, the participation of the local population in the management and profits of the Serengeti National Park is inadequate. The two neighboring districts of Serengeti and Ngorongoro therefore generally have a poorer socio-economic infrastructure than the Tanzanian average. As a result, there is insufficient identification with the protection measures, so that poachers are supported and herds are driven into the park. The aim of the FC measure is to improve the living conditions of the local population and to involve them in the protection of the national park. This also contributes to the protection of the Serengeti ecosystem. Key components include investments in the socio-economic infrastructure of the districts, the rehabilitation of the rural road network, the development of wildlife management areas and the strengthening of the Serengeti National Park administration. The priority target group is the population in the two neighboring districts of Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The FC funding share of the total costs of EUR 24 million is EUR 20.5 million. The Frankfurt Zoological Society will contribute EUR 1.0 million to the financing and support the project sponsor Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) in implementing measures to preserve biodiversity and use resources sustainably. The partner contribution from TANAPA and the target groups is estimated at EUR 2.5 million. At the beginning of 2024, an increase in the project by EUR 9 million was signed. In addition to other infrastructure measures, the financing of measures to improve livelihoods in the Ngorongoro district is part of this increase. |
