Description
Description | Peru is one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world. The forests in Peru's protected areas also provide important ecosystem services. However, protected area management in Peru's Amazon region cannot adequately ensure the preservation of biodiverse ecosystems and their services. This applies in particular to the control of the areas and the participation of the local population in the sustainable use of natural resources. The Sustainable Financing of the National Protected Area System II project aims to enable effective and impact-oriented management of protected areas in Peru's Amazon region and thereby preserve biodiverse ecosystems and their services. It also contributes to the goals of protecting and sustainably managing terrestrial ecosystems and forests (SDG 15) and ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns (SDG 12). The measures to achieve the goals consist of improved monitoring and control of the area of prioritized protected areas and participatory mechanisms for the sustainable management of natural resources. In addition, the key actors involved are to be strengthened institutionally. This combination of measures is intended to make the management of protected areas more efficient and more impact-oriented. The project is being carried out with the Ministry of Economy and Finance in Peru, which is both the recipient of the funds and the formal project sponsor. It will receive a grant of EUR 25 million as part of a results-based budget program. The target group is the state protected area administration, the regional governments of the departments of Loreto, Cusco and Ucayali, and the local and indigenous population in and around the protected areas. The project area extends over 15 national protected areas and four regional protected areas in the departments of Loreto, Ucayali and Cusco. |
