Sustainable forest protection

Economic growth, rising population numbers, increasing prosperity and increased demand for land and natural resources are increasing the pressure on connected natural habitats and ecosystems in Laos. The aim of the FC measure is to introduce effective management in selected natural areas (national parks and eco-corridors) that will contribute to protecting biodiversity in forest ecosystems and to improving the living conditions of the population that directly depends on the resources of selected national parks and corridors. The FC measure comprises three components. Firstly, national park administrations, state authorities at national, provincial and district levels and rural communities are supported in the management and planning of selected national parks and eco-corridors. Secondly, the implementation of legislation in the project region is promoted with the involvement and strengthening of local structures and thirdly, suitable investments and activities for sustainable land and forest management are financed. The target group of the project is the rural population living in the selected natural areas. In these natural areas, which include the national conservation areas of Hin Namno, Nam Kan and Nam Ha, around 70,000 people are expected to benefit from the FC module. The total volume of the FC measure is estimated at around EUR 17.5 million. It will be financed through an FC grant of up to EUR 15.5 million and a Laotian contribution of around 11% (around EUR 2 million).
